Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 30 MAS 727 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Before the Visit
The idea
Much of a good visit is prepared before the patient arrives.
In practice
Step one: triage the call and book the right kind of appointment, with enough time for the reason the patient gives. Step two: for a new patient, collect complete information and explain the payment policy. Step three: check whether the plan needs a referral or prior authorization for anything already ordered, and start it early. Step four: send reminders through the channels the patient has allowed. Step five: the day before, review the schedule and pull together what the provider will need, such as outside reports the patient authorized.
Where people slip
Problems not solved before the visit, such as a missing authorization, become delays during it, or denied claims after it.
