Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 30   MAS 730 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds

During the Examination

Captions available

The idea

During the examination, the medical assistant prepares, positions, protects and assists.

In practice

Step one: prepare the room and supplies for the exam the provider plans. Step two: give the patient a gown and privacy, and drape so that only what is examined is exposed. Step three: position the patient as the provider requests, locking the table first. Step four: serve as chaperone where the policy calls for one, attentive to the patient's comfort. Step five: hand supplies and help as the provider asks.

Where people slip

The patient's dignity and safety come first throughout. Explaining each step before it happens keeps a nervous patient informed and calm, and staying alert to the patient, not only to the provider's requests, is what lets you notice discomfort, dizziness or distress early enough to act.
