Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 30 MAS 729 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Rooming the Patient
The idea
Rooming gathers the subjective and objective information the provider will start from.
In practice
Step one: confirm identity again with two identifiers, and ask about allergies and reactions. Step two: ask the reason for the visit in an open way, and explore any symptom with the six questions. Step three: review medications by name, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. Step four: measure vital signs with correct technique, and record the route and the cuff or site used. Step five: compare readings with the expected ranges and with the patient's baseline, and report anything urgent before the provider enters.
Where people slip
Record the patient's words as they said them and the numbers as measured. Interpretation is the provider's. A complete, accurate rooming means the provider starts the exam already knowing what matters, and the patient does not have to tell the story twice.
