Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 30 MAS 728 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Arrival and Check-In
The idea
Check-in confirms who the patient is and protects their privacy from the first moment.
In practice
Step one: greet the patient courteously and ask them to state their name and date of birth. Step two: confirm demographics and insurance, and verify coverage. Step three: offer the notice of privacy practices if it is due. Step four: speak quietly and keep the reason for the visit off public sign-in sheets and out of earshot. Step five: watch for anyone coughing or showing signs of infection, and offer a mask and separate seating.
Where people slip
Front-desk details become the record's foundation. A misspelled name or a wrong birth date follows the patient into every later step, from the lab label to the claim, and it is far easier to catch at the desk than to untangle after the visit.
