Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 30 MAS 732 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Medications and Injections
The idea
Medications are given only as ordered, only within scope, and only after the rights are checked.
In practice
Step one: confirm the order and your permission to give it. Step two: check the rights at least three times, from preparation to administration. Step three: use the correct route, site and technique, with safety devices and sharps disposal. Step four: watch the patient afterward for any reaction, and report it at once. Step five: document the drug, route, site, time and your name immediately.
Where people slip
Most medication errors happen in familiar, routine moments, the hundredth vaccine of the season or the injection given while someone is asking a question. The checks exist because routine makes people skip them. Treat every dose as if it were the first one you have ever given, and stop whenever anything does not match the order.
