An Injection From Start to Finish

Captions available

The idea

Every injection follows the same overall sequence, whatever the medication.

In practice

Step one: confirm the order, and that the task is within your scope and the practice's policy. Step two: check the rights, identify the patient with two identifiers, and ask about allergies. Step three: prepare the medication, checking the label against the order. Step four: clean your hands, put on gloves, and select and expose the site. Step five: clean the site as the procedure directs, insert at the correct angle, and inject. Step six: withdraw, activate the safety device, and place the syringe in the sharps container. Step seven: watch the patient for any reaction, and document the drug, route, site, time and your name.

Where people slip

Watching the patient afterward is part of the injection. Reactions such as anaphylaxis can begin within minutes, so stay alert after the needle is out.
