Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 16 MAS 386 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Three Injection Types and Their Angles
The idea
Three injection types are named for the tissue they reach, and each has its own angle.
In practice
First, intradermal injections go into the skin's dermis, at a shallow angle of five to fifteen degrees, with the bevel facing up. Second, subcutaneous injections go into the fat beneath the skin, at forty-five or ninety degrees: ninety for normal-sized or larger patients, forty-five for thin patients with little fat at the site. Third, intramuscular injections go into muscle, at ninety degrees.
Where people slip
The wrong angle puts medication in the wrong tissue, where it may not work as intended. The order gives the route, and the route decides the angle, so confirm the route on the order before you choose your angle and your needle.
