Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 30 MAS 733 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Checkout and After the Visit
The idea
Checkout closes the visit and starts what comes next.
In practice
Step one: reinforce the provider's instructions, and check understanding with teach-back. Step two: schedule any follow-up with a specific date and time, and give an appointment card. Step three: make sure the visit is coded from the documentation, with diagnoses supporting each service. Step four: send the claim in the required format. Step five: complete any referrals, authorizations or results follow-up the provider ordered.
Where people slip
A visit is not finished when the patient leaves the building. Unfinished follow-up is how patients are lost between visits: a referral never sent, a result never called, an authorization never requested. Close each open item, or hand it on explicitly, before you consider the visit done, and document what is still pending.
