The idea
The teach-back method checks understanding by asking patients to explain, in their own words, what they need to know or do.
In practice
After reviewing instructions, ask, "To be sure I explained it well, can you tell me how you will do this at home?"
Where people slip
If the explanation is off, re-teach and check again; the gap is in the teaching, not the patient.
