Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 24 MAS 589 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Scheduling a New Patient
The idea
A new patient's first call sets up the whole relationship, so gather complete, accurate information.
In practice
Step one: record the patient's full name, with the spelling confirmed. Step two: record their address and day and evening phone numbers. Step three: ask the reason for the visit and the name of any referring provider. Step four: record the responsible party and insurance information. Step five: explain the practice's payment policy and what to bring. Step six: ask permission to call or leave messages, then confirm the date and time aloud before hanging up.
Where people slip
Recheck the schedule to be sure the appointment landed on the right day and time, because a booking error stays invisible until the patient arrives at the wrong time and the whole morning has to absorb it.
