Surgical Hand Antisepsis

Captions available

The idea

Surgical hand antisepsis is done either by scrubbing with a suitable antimicrobial soap and water or by using a suitable alcohol-based hand rub, before putting on sterile gloves.

In practice

Learn the guidance in order. First, the international guideline found the two methods equivalent for preventing surgical site infection. Second, the facility chooses the products, which must meet recognized performance standards. Third, the two methods are not combined one after the other, because water left on the hands weakens the alcohol rub. Fourth, when moving to the next procedure, the rub or scrub is repeated without another prior handwash. Fifth, where water quality cannot be assured, the alcohol-based method is recommended.

Where people slip

The method matters less than doing it correctly and completely every time. Follow the product's directions and the facility's procedure exactly.
