Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 17 TSC 409 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Gowning Yourself
The idea
After drying, the scrub person puts on a sterile gown by lifting it from its package and letting it unfold without touching anything unsterile.
In practice
Follow the steps the procedure documents describe. First, the gown pack was opened onto a clean surface before the scrub, with the sterile gloves opened onto its wrapper. Second, lift the folded gown straight up from the package. Third, step back from the table into an open area. Fourth, let the gown unfold without its sterile outside touching anything. Fifth, slide the hands into the armholes. Sixth, for closed gloving, keep the hands inside the sleeves, not through the cuffs. Seventh, an assistant secures the back of the gown.
Where people slip
A gown that brushes an unsterile surface while unfolding is contaminated and is replaced. The open space behind the scrub person is part of the technique.
