Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 17 TSC 411 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Closed Gloving
The idea
Closed gloving is the method used with a sterile gown: the gloves are put on while the hands are still inside the gown sleeves.
In practice
Follow the steps as the procedure documents describe them. First, the glove package is turned so the glove fingers point toward you. Second, through the sleeve, one hand grasps the glove for the same hand. Third, the glove is flipped onto the palm of that hand, fingers toward you, without the fingers coming out of the cuff. Fourth, the other hand, still inside its sleeve, grabs the glove's edge and pulls it over the cuff and the hand. Fifth, the sleeve is pulled up and the glove follows onto the hand. Sixth, the same is done for the other hand. A second pair of gloves can then be slid on over the first.
Where people slip
The method looks awkward at first; one compendium calls it puppet hands. Practice it under supervision, and follow your facility's procedure, which may differ in detail.
