Preparing to Scrub: The Order of Steps

Captions available

The idea

Scrubbing, gowning and gloving follow a fixed order, so that nothing has to be touched after the hands are prepared.

In practice

Follow the whole sequence. First, put on the head covering, eye protection and mask. Second, open the gown pack onto a clean surface and open the gloves onto it. Third, perform surgical hand antisepsis by the facility's chosen method. Fourth, dry the hands and arms, with the sterile towel or by air-drying after a rub. Fifth, lift and put on the gown, hands kept inside the sleeves. Sixth, have an assistant secure the back. Seventh, put on gloves by the closed method, then a second pair.

Where people slip

Every step that comes after the scrub depends on the steps before it. A mask adjusted after scrubbing, or a glove packet opened with scrubbed hands, means starting again.
