The idea
Surgical hand preparation goes further than routine hand hygiene: it removes transient flora and reduces resident flora on the hands and forearms.
In practice
It also slows the regrowth of bacteria under sterile gloves, which matters most if a glove is punctured during the procedure without anyone noticing.
Where people slip
Ordinary handwashing is not a substitute for the surgical scrub before joining the sterile field.
