Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 2   TSC 031 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Resident and Transient Flora

Captions available

The idea

Normal flora, the microbes living on the body without causing disease, come in two groups: resident and transient.

In practice

Resident flora live deep in the skin and are not removed by ordinary hand hygiene; transient flora are picked up by contact and are removed by handwashing.

Where people slip

Resident flora return after washing, which is why scrubbed hands are still covered by sterile gloves.
