Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 2   TSC 035 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Body's First Defenses

Captions available

The idea

The body's first defenses are barriers that keep microbes out, flush them away or destroy them on arrival.

In practice

Intact skin keeps microbes out; mucous membranes trap them; stomach acid destroys many that are swallowed; cilia sweep mucus from the airways.

Where people slip

An incision, a burn or a cut breaks the skin barrier, creating a portal of entry the body did not have.
