Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 2   TSC 038 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Where Surgical Infections Come From

Captions available

The idea

Contamination of a surgical wound is either endogenous, from the patient's own flora, or exogenous, from outside the patient.

In practice

Endogenous sources include the patient's skin, bowel and mucous membranes; exogenous sources include the team's hands, the air, instruments and supplies.

Where people slip

Exogenous sources are the ones the scrub person directly controls through sterile technique, so they are never allowed to slip.
