Why Wound Class Matters
Captions available
The idea
Surgical wounds are classed by how contaminated they are likely to be, and the class reflects the risk of a surgical site infection.
In practice
Higher classes describe wounds where microbes are more likely present; in dirty wounds, the organisms that cause infection were there before the operation.
Where people slip
Wound class guides decisions such as preventive antibiotics, which the surgical team makes.
