Surgical Site Infection Defined

The idea

A surgical site infection is an infection in the surgical wound or around the incision within thirty days of the procedure, or within a year for deep infections involving an implant.

In practice

Follow how one develops, step by step. First, microbes reach the wound during or after surgery, either from the patient's own skin, bowel or mucous membranes, or from outside, such as hands, instruments or the environment. Second, they arrive at a portal of entry the operation created. Third, if the patient's defenses and the preventive measures are not enough, they multiply in the tissue. Fourth, the infection shows itself, often days later, after the patient has gone home. Prevention therefore works on the earlier steps: preventive antibiotics are given so that they are in the tissue before contamination happens, and sterile technique, skin preparation and clean instruments reduce what reaches the wound.

Where people slip

Surgical site infections can prolong hospital stays, add cost and even cause death, and the people who caused one rarely see it happen. That is why a break in technique is corrected at the moment it occurs, not judged by its later result.
