Surgical Site Infection After Discharge

Captions available

The idea

Surgical site infections often appear after the patient has gone home, within thirty days of surgery or within a year when an implant is involved.

In practice

Learn what happens, in order. First, microbes introduced at surgery multiply in the wound over days. Second, the signs appear: redness, swelling, warmth, pain, pus and fever. Third, the patient is treated with antibiotics and wound care, sometimes with a return to surgery. Fourth, the infection is recorded and reviewed by infection-prevention staff. Fifth, as unit two showed, the cause can rarely be traced to a single moment in the operating room.

Where people slip

The scrub person almost never sees the infections that sterile technique prevents, or the ones a lapse causes. That is why sterile technique is kept by rule, every time, rather than by results the scrub person can see.
