Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 27 TSC 661 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Wound Dehiscence and Evisceration
Captions available
The idea
Wound dehiscence is separation of the wound edges; evisceration is when internal organs protrude through the opened wound.
In practice
Signs include separating edges, increased drainage and visible deeper tissue; the surgeon is notified immediately and the wound covered with a sterile dressing.
Where people slip
Hematoma and infection can lead to dehiscence, which is why closure and sterile technique matter.
