Malignant Hyperthermia After the Case

Captions available

The idea

After a malignant hyperthermia crisis, the patient needs continued treatment and close monitoring, because the reaction can recur.

In practice

Follow what happens after the crisis, as the textbook describes. First, the specific antidote is continued for at least a day and adjusted to the patient's response, by the anesthesia team. Second, the patient is monitored closely for signs of recurrence. Third, the handoff to the recovery team includes the event and the need for higher-level care. Fourth, the surgeon and anesthesia provider inform the patient and family. Fifth, close family members are advised to consider genetic testing for susceptibility.

Where people slip

The family history question asked before every anesthetic exists because of this condition. A patient's answer about relatives who had problems with anesthesia is passed on, never dismissed.
