The idea
Inflammation is the body's second defense, and its signs are redness, heat, swelling, pain and loss of function.
In practice
Damaged cells release chemicals such as histamine, so more blood reaches the area, causing warmth and redness, and leaking fluid causes swelling.
Where people slip
Inflammation is protective and part of healing; it does not by itself mean infection, which is judged by the clinical team.
