Contaminated and dirty wounds carry the highest infection risk.
In practice
Contaminated includes fresh accidental wounds, major breaks in technique and gross spillage from the gut; dirty includes old traumatic wounds and wounds with existing infection or a perforated organ.
Where people slip
In dirty wounds, the organisms that may cause infection are already present before surgery begins.
