Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 2 TSC 030 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
The Chain of Infection
The idea
Infection spreads only when all six links in a chain are present, and breaking any one link stops it.
In practice
Walk the six links in order, with a surgical example for each. First, the causative agent, such as a bacterium. Second, the reservoir where it lives and multiplies, most often the human body, warm, moist and dark. Third, the portal of exit, the way it leaves, such as blood or drainage from a wound. Fourth, the mode of transmission, such as contaminated hands or instruments. Fifth, the portal of entry, and in surgery the incision itself is one. Sixth, the susceptible host, the patient whose defenses are lowered by illness, age or the operation. Now notice where surgical practice cuts the chain: sterilization removes the agent from instruments, hand hygiene and gloves interrupt transmission, and skin preparation reduces the microbes at the portal of entry.
Where people slip
The incision is a portal of entry you create on purpose. Every sterile technique in this course exists to keep that one link from connecting to the others.
