Prions Are Different
Captions available
The idea
Prions are infectious agents made of an abnormally folded protein, not cells or viruses, and they cause diseases such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
In practice
The national sterilization guideline describes prions as extremely resistant to ordinary sterilization processes and disinfecting agents.
Where people slip
The guideline notes that the standard reprocessing scheme does not solve the problem of inactivating prions, so suspected cases follow the facility's own instructions.
