Skin Flora and the Incision

The idea
Healthy skin carries its own community of microbes, which help keep other microbes from settling there.
In practice
Different bacteria dominate moist, dry and oily areas of skin; staphylococci, for example, are common in moist areas such as the nostrils and armpits.
Where people slip
An incision carries those same skin microbes toward deeper tissue, which is why the skin is prepared with an antiseptic before surgery.
