The idea
Nails are kept short, and all jewelry, artificial nails and nail polish are removed before surgical hand preparation.
In practice
If hands are visibly soiled, they are washed first and debris is removed from under the nails with a nail cleaner rather than a brush.
Where people slip
Rings and watches can hide bacteria and tear gloves, so scrubbed staff do not wear them.
