Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 17 TSC 406 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
The Alcohol Rub Method
The idea
In the alcohol-based method, a surgical hand rub is applied to clean, dry hands and forearms and rubbed in for the time the manufacturer recommends.
In practice
Follow the method in order. First, hands are clean and completely dry before the product is applied. Second, enough rub is used to keep the hands and forearms wet throughout the procedure. Third, every surface is covered for the manufacturer's time, which the guideline gives as typically about a minute and a half. Fourth, the hands and forearms are allowed to dry completely before sterile gloves go on.
Where people slip
Alcohol rubs are flammable, and their effect is weakened if the hands were wet when the rub was applied. Dry hands before the rub, a full application during it, and complete drying after it are all part of the method, not optional extras.
