The Scrub With Soap

Captions available

The idea

In the soap-and-water method, the hands and forearms are scrubbed with an antimicrobial soap for the time the manufacturer recommends.

In practice

Follow the method in order. First, attire is on and jewelry is off. Second, the hands and forearms are wet. Third, antimicrobial soap is applied and every surface of the hands and forearms is scrubbed; the guideline notes the manufacturer's time is usually two to five minutes. Fourth, the hands and forearms are rinsed. Fifth, they are dried with a sterile towel. Throughout, the scrubbed hands touch nothing unsterile, and the sink and taps are not touched.

Where people slip

Follow the product's time exactly. A shortened scrub leaves bacteria behind, and a longer one adds strain to skin that frequent scrubbing already irritates. If the scrub is interrupted or the hands touch anything unsterile, it starts again.
