The idea
Frequent surgical hand preparation can cause skin irritation, dryness and dermatitis.
In practice
Irritation is less common with alcohol-based rubs than with some soap scrubs, though any product can sting broken skin.
Where people slip
Broken skin is a route for infection, so skin problems are reported to occupational health rather than ignored.
