The idea
On a draped table, only the top surface is considered sterile; any drape hanging below the table's edge is considered contaminated.
In practice
Items that slide over the edge of the table are not brought back up onto the field.
Where people slip
A drape below table level is out of sight and close to unsterile surfaces, which is why it no longer counts as sterile.
