Masks and Eye Protection When Scrubbed

Captions available

The idea

A mask and eye protection are part of the scrub person's protection and the patient's.

In practice

Learn why each piece matters. First, the mask covers the nose and mouth, protecting the patient from microbes in the wearer's breath during a sterile procedure. Second, the mask also protects the wearer from splashes of blood and fluid. Third, eye protection, goggles or a face shield, protects the eyes from splashes, and personal eyeglasses are not adequate eye protection. Fourth, masks and eye protection must be worn together whenever splashes or sprays of blood may occur. Fifth, all of them are put on before the scrub, because they cannot be adjusted afterward without contaminating the gloves.

Where people slip

Eye protection is removed for comfort more often than any other protection, and splashes to the eyes are a common exposure. Choose eyewear that fits and does not fog, and keep it on.
