Summarizing for an Audience
The idea
The method's summary pattern turns a document into a short read for a named audience, and its guardrails are the audience, the points that must appear, and a length cap.
In practice
Step one: name the reader and what they will do with the summary, for example frontline staff who need to follow a new rule. Step two: paste the full source, not a description of it. Step three: list the points the summary must cover, such as what the thing is, why it matters, and what readers will see or do. Step four: set the cap and the register, such as plain language and under five hundred words. Step five: add the grounding line: use only what the source says, and list anything unclear as a question.
Where people slip
Summaries fail most often by omission, which no reader can see from the summary alone. Check that every required point appears and is accurate.
