A Summary Chain, Checked
The idea
A worked example, constructed for this course, chains the patterns together: a compliance officer summarizing a forty-page vendor contract for her leadership team, with each step checked before the next.
In practice
The contract is internal but holds no personal data, so she uses the company's governed tool. Step one is extraction. She asks for the clauses on term, renewal, termination, liability, data handling and price changes, quoted word for word with section numbers, and not stated where a topic is absent. The extraction returns six quotes and one not stated, for data handling. Step two is the check. She opens the contract and confirms each quote is exact and correctly numbered. One is wrong: the renewal quote merges two separate sections, and the merged text makes renewal look automatic when it requires notice. She replaces it with the two real quotes. She also searches for data handling herself and finds it in an appendix the extraction missed. Step three is the summary. She gives the corrected quotes only, names the readers and what they must decide, and asks for one page with each point citing its section, plus a list of questions for legal. Step four is the review. She checks each sentence of the summary against its cited quote, adds the appendix point, and sends it marked as drafted with AI and checked against the contract.
Where people slip
Two errors entered the chain at the first step: a merged quote and a missed appendix. Both were caught because the quotes were checked before the summary was written. Had she summarized in one step, the merged renewal clause would have reached leadership sounding authoritative, and the missing data clause would not have been noticed at all.
