Drafting a Message

Captions available

The idea

Drafting an email or message combines the prompt elements with the method's grounding, and the course's version of the pattern has five steps.

In practice

Step one: instruction: draft a reply, an announcement or a request, and say which. Step two: context: who will read it, the relationship, and the outcome you want from it. Step three: input: paste the message you are answering, or the facts the message must contain. Step four: constraints: length, tone, and anything that must or must not be promised. Step five: output: ask for the draft plus a list of any statement in it that you should confirm before sending.

Where people slip

A draft message can make commitments. Read it as the recipient will, and remove anything you are not authorized to promise.
