A Silver Pack for a Library Loan

The idea

A worked example, constructed for this course, assembles a Silver Pack for the library's Loan from the work of earlier units.

In practice

The header names the Loan, a data record in the circulation zone, with the head of circulation as steward. The definition, agreed in unit two, reads: one period of borrowing one item by one member, from checkout to return; a renewal changes its due date and does not create a new Loan. The scope note adds that interlibrary borrowing is a separate thing. The purpose lists fair access, knowing where every item is, getting overdue items back, and the annual council figures. The properties are grouped into parties, timing, place and rules, with the policy version recorded on the Loan. The lifecycle has active, renewed, overdue, paused and closed, with the transitions written for each, including the pause added in unit three. The card index lists Create Loan, View Loan, Renew Loan, Pause Loan, Close Loan, Generate Overdue Notice, Generate Renewal Confirmation, and Log Loan Change. The index shows no archive card, so one is added to the open questions. The relationships say a Loan links one Member to one Item, follows one Loan Policy Version, may produce a Fine, and logs into the Circulation Log. Three open questions remain: lost items, laptop rules, and how long a pause may last.

Where people slip

Nearly every line came from earlier units. The Pack added no new research; it gathered decisions that were scattered across a definition, two cards, a map and a workshop. That is the book's point: if you did phases one and two, you already hold most of a Pack.
