Reviewing the Library Loan Pack

The idea

A worked example, constructed for this course, runs the method's review session on the library's Silver Loan Pack.

In practice

The analyst invites a desk librarian, a branch manager, the finance officer and the systems administrator for seventy-five minutes. The one-pager goes out two days early, drafted by an AI tool from the Pack and checked by the analyst, who removes one sentence the tool added about loans being transferable between members, which the Pack never said. The framing is short: we are testing whether this description of a Loan is accurate enough to build on. On the definition, the librarian hesitates. A loan of a reference item for use inside the building is called a loan at the desk but never leaves the building and has no due date. Is it a Loan? The group agrees it is a different thing, an in-library use, and the scope note gains an exclusion. On fields, the systems administrator points out that the branch where a loan began and the branch where the item was returned are often different, and the Pack holds only one. The finance officer says the council figures count by returning branch. A second branch field is added. On lifecycle, the branch manager asks what happens when a member loses an item. Nobody can answer, so the question stays open with the manager as owner. On cards, the group reads Renew Loan and confirms the policy version rule.

Where people slip

Four people found three changes and one open question in seventy-five minutes, none of which the analyst, the Pack or the AI tool had seen. The session also caught the tool's own invention in the one-pager before anyone read it. Validation found what only people who do the work could know.
