Building a Pack: Index, Links, Usage

The idea

Steps five to seven of building a Pack gather what is already known about the thing's behavior, connections and use.

In practice

Step one, card index: collect every card on the thing and group them by change type, so that create, read, update, generate and log each show their cards. Step two, relationships: write them in plain language. The Incident Report belongs to a Location, may reference a Patient, may create a Case, produces a Regulatory Report File and logs into the audit log. Step three, usage: list the screens, interfaces and reports where the thing appears, such as the intake form, the create interface, and the monthly safety summary.

Where people slip

The index makes gaps obvious, such as having no archive card yet. The usage list means that when the thing changes, designers, developers and report writers all know they are affected.
