Building a Pack: Lifecycle

Captions available

The idea

Step four of building a Pack extracts the thing's states and transitions from its cards and workflows.

In practice

Step one: list the states and what each means. For the Incident Report, new means drafted and not yet reviewed, submitted means finalized by the reporter, under review means assigned to an investigator, closed means review complete, and archived means kept for the record with no further changes. Step two: list the allowed transitions, including the return from under review to submitted when more information is needed. Step three: for each transition, note who may trigger it, what must be complete first, and what happens after, such as notifying the risk manager. Step four: show it as a table, a diagram or both.

Where people slip

The book observes that writing the lifecycle often reveals cards nobody wrote, such as adding the reviewer's findings. Push those back into phase two.
