The M-CaReM-AI Method: Defining Work for AI / Unit 6 MCM 149 review, 2 to 3 minutes
Does Anything in the Library Earn Gold?
The idea
A worked example, constructed for this course, applies the method's Gold test to the library's things, and reaches an answer some team members did not expect.
In practice
The method reserves Gold for things that are audit-critical, legally sensitive, or central to money, safety or rights. The team goes through its core things. The Member holds personal data, but the library's privacy obligations are met by its access rules, which a Silver Pack can carry. The Item is important, but a mistake costs a misplaced book, not a person's rights. The Loan is the center of the domain, and the team argues for Gold. But when they ask what a mistake in a Loan would cost, the answer is usually an inconvenience, so it stays Silver, with a matrix because it changes often. Then they reach the Fine Calculation Record from unit four. It decides how much money a member owes, it is audited every year by the funding council, and members dispute it months later. Here a mistake costs someone money and can only be defended with the right records. It becomes the library's only Gold Pack, with detailed transition rules, links to the Loan Policy Version, the council's audit requirement in its obligations, and its own traceability matrix. The Membership Card, still an open question, stays Bronze as a seed.
Where people slip
The most important thing in the library's daily work, the Loan, was not the Gold one. The Gold thing was a record nobody had named before the auditor question. The method's test is the cost of a mistake, not how often the thing is used, and it pointed somewhere unexpected.
