A Matrix for the Library Loan
The idea
A worked example, constructed for this course, builds a matrix for the library's Loan, which unit six kept Silver but flagged as changing often.
In practice
The analyst starts from the Loan Pack, version one point one, and keeps the standard rows. The policy row lists the Loan Policy and its versions, the council's figures requirement, and the library's privacy rules for borrowing records. The card row copies the Pack's index, from Create Loan to Log Loan Change. The data row needs the systems administrator. It lists the loans table, the circulation log, the self-service kiosk interface, the nightly overdue job, and the export that feeds the council figures. The screens row lists the desk checkout screen, the kiosk, the member's online account, and the branch manager's reports page. The reports row lists the council figures, a monthly loans-by-branch report and the overdue list. The testing row is thin: one checkout suite, and nothing for renewals. The operations row lists the desk procedures manual and the training for new library assistants. The AI row lists the chatbot that answers members' questions about due dates and fines. Each row's owner initials it. One suggestion from an AI draft, the interlibrary request form, is removed, because interlibrary borrowing is a separate thing.
Where people slip
Building the matrix exposed two gaps no other phase had: renewals had no tests, and the chatbot read loan rules nobody had told it about. Both were invisible until someone tried to list everything that depends on a Loan. Neither would have shown up in a review of the Loan's own Pack, because neither is part of the Loan; both depend on it.
