The Five-Step Repair Process
The idea
The book sets out its own five-step repair process, based on the research and the author's experience, with the steps taken in order and none skipped.
In practice
Step one: acknowledge the violation specifically, naming what you did and its impact, not "the miscommunication." Step two: accept responsibility without qualification: "I made that decision, and it was wrong." Step three: describe specific, observable changes the other person can check you against. Step four: demonstrate those changes consistently over time, without expecting quick results. Step five: create space for the other person's process, because the timeline of forgiveness belongs to the person who was harmed.
Where people slip
The book adds a warning about step five: pressuring someone to forgive or move on before they are ready is itself a form of control, and it undermines the repair.
