Three Phases of Recovery
The idea
For leaders recovering from their own failure, the book lays out three phases of recovery: acknowledgment, understanding and reconstruction.
In practice
Step one, acknowledgment: name what happened, what you did and its consequences, specifically, without qualification, and to the people affected, as in "I owe you an apology," not "I owe myself a lesson." Step two, understanding: analyse what produced the failure, the wrong assumptions, the ignored information, the emotional state and the missed warnings, focusing on what you did rather than who you are. Step three, reconstruction: sustain changed behaviour for weeks, months and sometimes years, even before anyone notices.
Where people slip
The book separates self-recrimination from diagnosis: "I am a bad leader" produces shame, which paralyses, while analysing what you did produces insight, which enables change. Acknowledgment, it adds, is not theatrical contrition.
