The Lost ARC / Unit 12   ARC 277 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Three Levels

Captions available

The idea

Schein described three levels of culture: artifacts you can see, espoused values that are officially stated, and basic underlying assumptions that actually drive behaviour.

In practice

Office layout and rituals; a mission statement on the wall; and the unspoken belief that senior people are above the rules.

Where people slip

The deepest level is often unconscious, the book notes, which makes it hardest to see and change.
