Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 11 TSC 263 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Checking Equipment Before the Case
The idea
Every piece of equipment needed for a case is checked before the patient enters the room.
In practice
Follow a typical pre-case check. First, inspect electrical equipment and cords for damage, and remove any that look wrong. Second, test that the electrosurgical unit, suction and lights work. Third, confirm that positioning devices on the preference card are present and intact. Fourth, confirm that the anesthesia equipment has had its daily check, which is the anesthesia provider's responsibility. Fifth, confirm that the steam sterilizers serving the room have passed their daily tests, which the processing department records. Sixth, check that a smoke evacuator is available if smoke will be produced.
Where people slip
A check done after the patient is asleep is a check done too late. The scrub person and circulating nurse share the pre-case check, and anything that fails is replaced before induction.
