Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 11 TSC 266 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Cleaning the Room Before a Case
The idea
The operating room is cleaned so that it is ready for the next patient, with surfaces disinfected according to facility policy.
In practice
Follow the general sequence. First, contaminated work surfaces are decontaminated with an appropriate disinfectant after procedures, and immediately after any spill of blood or other potentially infectious material. Second, noncritical environmental surfaces, such as tables and equipment that touch only intact skin, are cleaned with a low-level disinfectant, following its contact time. Third, floors are kept clean and dry, because fluids on the floor cause slips. Fourth, the room is restocked and checked before the next case begins. Facilities schedule terminal cleaning of each room at the end of the day.
Where people slip
The order of cleaning and the products used are set by facility policy. A room that looks clean is not the same as a room that has been disinfected for the required contact time.
