The idea
The anesthesia machine delivers gases and vapors to the patient, and a scavenging system removes the excess.
In practice
Anesthesia equipment is checked before each day's use, vaporizers are turned off when not in use, and spills of liquid anesthetic agents are cleaned up promptly.
