Checking the Setup Before the Patient Arrives
The idea
Before the patient arrives, the scrub person checks the completed setup against a short list of essentials.
In practice
Run the check in order. First, the internal indicators of every opened set were checked and passed. Second, the initial count is done and recorded. Third, every medication and solution is labelled. Fourth, needles and sharps are contained, with a place for the neutral zone. Fifth, suction and electrosurgical connections are ready to pass off the field when the time comes. Sixth, the setup matches the preference card and the scheduled procedure. Anything that fails is fixed now, while the room is quiet.
Where people slip
Once the patient is in the room, attention moves to the patient. A setup problem found then competes with every other task.
